AI as Your Co-Therapist: The Benefits and the Dangers

Therapy has never been more accessible, but that accessibility comes with major caveats. With AI-powered mental health tools multiplying rapidly, millions of people are turning to chatbots and digital companions to process emotions, manage anxiety, and navigate life’s hardest moments. It’s a remarkable development, and a double-edged one. AI can provide genuine support, but it can also create a false sense of care that delays or replaces the human connection that real healing requires.

The most compelling argument for AI as a mental health tool is availability. Therapists have waitlists. Sessions cost money. And at 2 a.m., when anxiety spikes or grief hits without warning, a human professional simply isn’t an option for most people. AI tools can provide immediate, judgment-free support in those in-between moments: helping someone breathe during a panic attack, journal through a difficult emotion, or simply feel heard when no one else is around.

AI is also consistent. It doesn’t have a bad day. It doesn’t project its own stress onto a conversation. For people who struggle with the vulnerability of talking to another person, such as those with social anxiety, past relational trauma, or deep shame, an AI interface can serve as a lower-stakes entry point into emotional exploration.

Used wisely, AI can reinforce therapeutic concepts between sessions: reminding users of coping strategies, tracking mood patterns over time, and gently prompting self-reflection in ways that extend the value of traditional therapy.

Here is where honest reckoning is essential. AI does not actually understand you. It processes language and generates responses that feel empathetic, but there is no genuine comprehension, no clinical judgment, and no ethical accountability behind those words. For someone in a fragile emotional state, that distinction is not a technicality. It matters enormously.

There is a real risk of over-reliance. When a chatbot or AI companion responds warmly and instantly to emotional distress, it can create the illusion of a therapeutic relationship, one that feels safe and supportive but lacks the depth, nuance, and human attunement that genuine healing demands. People may find themselves confiding in an algorithm instead of doing the harder, more rewarding work of building real human connection.

Perhaps most critically, AI is not equipped to manage crisis. Suicidal ideation, severe trauma, psychosis, and abuse require trained, licensed human professionals: full stop. No chatbot, however sophisticated, should be the primary support for someone in serious psychological danger.

AI tools can be a valuable complement to therapy. But they should never be a substitute for the real thing. The most important thing any person can do for their mental health is to build relationships with people who can truly show up for them, including experienced counselors like Nancy Travers who are equipped to help patients manage anxiety, depression, and relationship issues.

Technology can hold space. Only humans can truly share it.

‘It’s Not My Fault!’: Why Defensiveness is Damaging

“Giulio, did you take your sister’s cookie?” I watch as the look on the two pint-sized faces cycles from affront to indignation to anger to something I can only describe as steely-eyed determination. I brace myself.  His expression matches that of Mel Gibson, face full of Scottish war paint, charging toward the enemy screaming, “Freedom!” Giulio is likewise ready to defend his position to the death. “It’s not my fault!

The Myth of Being “Too Needy” in Relationships

Where the “Too Needy” Label Comes From “Too needy” is one of the most common—and damaging—labels in relationships. It’s often used when one partner expresses a desire for more connection, reassurance, or emotional responsiveness, and the other partner feels overwhelmed, pressured, or unsure how to respond. Instead of identifying what’s actually needed, the experience gets reduced to a character flaw. But needing connection isn’t a flaw. It’s biology. You’re Wired for
