Psychotherapists v Psychics

Time was when cultures depended on gifted folks to help the general population through difficult times. These gifted folks offered spiritual or emotional guidance, perhaps using tarot cards, crystals, astrology, prayer or meditation to support their efforts. Historically, these people were the only resources available.

Fast forward to today, and we still find a surprising number of people investing their time and money with clairvoyants, psychics and fortunetellers. Which is perfectly fine unless those seeking help want to improve their mental health and find positive results. Those outcomes are seldom in the purview of clairvoyants.

On the other hand, research shows that psychotherapy offered by mental health professionals, using empirically supported treatments, is indeed a source of reliable help for those in need. Of course, some therapists will be a better fit for you than others.

In general, you should look for therapists who:

  • are empathetic to your needs,
  • work with you toward a set of goals you have agreed upon,
  • accept your situation without judgment,
  • communicate with you on a personal level,
  • provide consistent feedback to you, and
  • accept responsibility when things don’t go as well as planned.

When should you seek psychotherapy?

This is a very personal decision, and not always an easy one. So ask yourself if you have problems that you can’t solve and that won’t go away. Ask yourself if there’s an impediment in your life that blocks you from becoming the person you wish to be. And ask yourself if you want to depend on the kinds of proven scientifically based approaches employed by a qualified therapist.

How can a therapist help you?

A professional therapist can help you when you’re struggling with life problems. He or she can work with you to develop attitudes that make you more resilient to stress, and to develop a way of thinking about yourself that will influence your behavior in a positive way. You will develop a mindset that will make you feel more in control of your life. And your improvement will be based on techniques and strategies proven to be scientifically effective.
